The Best Homemade Grout Cleaner for Tile Floors and Walls

Do you have dirty grout? Looking for an easy way to clean your white or colored grout? There are so many homemade grout cleaners out there, but which one works the best? This DIY grout cleaner uses vinegar and baking soda and will make your tile grout clean with just a little elbow grease!

When we bought house #3, the grout in the kid’s bathroom was dingy and discolored looking from general wear and tear. I wanted to freshen it up and lighten the color, to what I could tell was the real grout color in the areas that hadn’t been in the high traffic areas.

I really wanted to have clean grout, but wasn’t sure where to begin, so I took to Pinterest and looked at several different recipes. Most of the recipes had pretty strong chemicals, like ammonia in them.

My main objective was to use natural products that were safe and non-toxic cleaner {like my DIY Wood Floor Cleaner recipe} because I was pregnant at the time and didn’t want to use any ingredients that would harm the baby or myself.

After some searching for the best way to clean grout, I came across a grout cleaner recipe that used baking soda, lemon juice and vinegar. I knew this was the one I had to try!

Cleaning grout is not a fun task by any means. It’s tedious and requires a lot of scrubbing. However, if you can devote a little bit of time to grout cleaning, I promise you will be so happy with the end results! This grout cleaner worked and made my floors look brand new!

   Baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice work as a powerful combination to clean grout! Make a cleaning solution with these ingredients mixed with water and you’ll have clean grout in no time!

   The best way to clean tile grout is to regularly clean it with a mild cleaner and scrub brush. In between deep cleanings, wipe down tile with a wash rag or squeegee.
3. How do you clean bathroom tiles naturally?
   The best way to clean bathroom tiles naturally is to use natural cleaners that are often found in your kitchen pantry. Baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice work fantastic when combined together with water.
4. What removes urine from bathroom tile grout effectively?
   If you have little boys like me, you are likely to have experienced urine around the base of the toilet. I have found the most effective way to remove the urine smell and crusty build up is to use a scrubbing pad and a homemade cleaner with baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice and water mixed into a spray bottle. Spray on the dried urine and let sit for at least five minutes. Use the scrubbing pad to remove any build up. Rinse with a wet wash rag. Repeat if necessary.
5. What is the best way to clean my tile shower?
   Most likely your tile shower has soap scum build up, which seems like an odd thing to happen in a shower, but it does. I like to use a scrubbing pad and this homemade grout cleaner to remove the soap scum and hard water stains that build up in my shower.

   The great thing about grout cleaner, is it can also be used to clean ceramic tile floors! Mix ingredients in a large bucket and use a wash rag to clean ceramic tile. Rinse throughly with clean water.

   Use a scrubbing pad to gently scrub the hard water marks away using a grout cleaner and water.
8. Can you use toilet bowl cleaner to clean grout?
   While some toilet bowl cleaners have been successful at cleaning grout, most cleaners tend to have a strong smell. Shaklee makes an amazing non-toxic, laundry stain remover powder that works amazing at cleaning toilet bowls and grout cleaner.
9. Can you use hydrogen peroxide to clean grout?
   If you have mold on your tiles or grout, hydrogen peroxide is a great cleaner for removing the mold. Mix equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle. Generously spray onto tile or grout and let sit for 1 hour. Use an old toothbrush or grout brush to scrub away the mold. Rinse clean with warm water.
10. Can you use liquid dish soap to clean grout?
    Dawn dish soap mixed into a bucket or a spray bottle with warm water makes a great tile grout cleaner that is easy and safe to use. The Dawn dish soap works great at removing grease, especially in the kitchen, and creating clean grout lines.
11. What grout cleaning brush should I use?
    Old toothbrushes work great for cleaning grout. However, sometimes you need a brush with stronger bristles for extra dirty grout. These brushes are my favorite as they are similar in size to a toothbrush and get in between the tiles perfectly!
12. Do I need to seal my grout?
    Using a grout sealer after your grout is sparkly clean is a great idea. Consult your local hardware store with what type of grout sealer will work best depending on the type of tile you have – ie: ceramic tile, porcelain tile, marble tile, stone tile floors, etc.
