I recently bought a new rug for our front entryway. I love it so much and it fits perfectly in the space.

In my perfect world, no one would ever step on it!! Especially not with shoes on or muddy dog paws – rather, it would just be a beautiful display item to look at!! 😂 But… unfortunately in real life it gets used and is stepped on with shoes (*insert skin crawl! I literally hate shoes in the house). Plus, it’s so plush and comfy our dogs love to lay on it.

So, in an effort to keep it clean, beautiful and smelling good I went on the hunt for a Natural Carpet Powder freshener recipe that was safe, non-toxic, easy to make and did not utilize essential oils (not to knock essential oils but the scents vary so much between brands and I’m really sensitive (aka picky) to smells). Fortunately I found the perfect homemade carpet powder recipe that met all of my stipulations and is super cost effective!

This homemade carpet refresh powder utilizes baking soda, dried lavender and dried rosemary. I love the smell of fresh or dried lavender – just not in manufactured scent form, it gives me a headache 🙁 For years I’ve searched our local natural stores for dried lavender buds and have never been able to find them (the only place I’ve ever found them was in college in Toledo, OH). Fortunately for me, I was able to purchase all of the ingredients on Amazon and they arrived in 2 days! I priced everything out and went with the most cost-effective ingredients and have included the links below.

Ingredients

  • baking soda – this acts as an odor neutralizer and helps eliminate any bad odors that may be trapped in your carpet fibers
  • dried lavender buds – adds a really beautiful, fresh smell
  • dried rosemary – not only does rosemary smell wonderful, it has antibacterial and anti fungal properties making it a great natural cleaner to put on your carpet

Supplies/Equipment

  • powdered sugar shaker cup – you will need a dispenser with with large holes at the top. I have a powdered sugar shaker cup, so I used that and it worked perfectly!
  • food processor – the dried herbs needs to be blended so you don’t have large flower buds and herbs laying on your carpet. Also, by chopping the herbs, the natural oils are released making the scents more magnified

STEP 1: Combine all ingredients in the food processor and blend together. If you do have little helpers helping, make sure that the lid on the food processor is fully on so they will not be injured by the blade.
