How I Turned $11 in Thrift Store Finds Into Patriotic Porch Decor

Decorating for the Fourth of July and America’s 250th birthday doesn’t have to mean buying expensive seasonal decorations. During a recent trip to my local thrift store, I found a wooden box, a small American flag decoration, and a faux grass arrangement for less than $12 total. With a little creativity, those simple secondhand finds became a layered patriotic porch display that looks right at home on my Victorian front porch.

Why Thrift Stores Are My Favorite Place to Find Seasonal Decor

Which reason do I want to go with…?

  1. I’m cheap {aka smart with my money}
  2. I change my mind often
  3. I have an old old old house, so new decor doesn’t look right in it
  4. I love the thrill of a unique or good find/buy
  5. Shopping is one of my most favorite past times

Honestly, it’s a mix of all five! If you’ve followed Gathered In The Kitchen for any length of time, you probably already know that I love a good thrift store find.

When I was younger, if you would have told me I would have set foot in a thrift store, I would have said “me? yeah right!” But…as I’ve gotten older (wahhh), wiser, and more set on what I like, the thrift store honestly the perfect place for me to shop regularly!

My brain is sooo wired to being creative and hands on that I simply struggle going to a store and buying something at the store and just bringing it home and setting it in place. I always have to do something to it, to make it unique. To make it fit our home.

With that wee little problem ( 😂🤣 ), that often means my house is unfinished or a total wreck! But…in the end, it all always comes together and is just how I dreamed it would be. You just have to have vision, patience (mainly my husband, not me! lol) and the desire to do something unique!

The Thrift Store Finds That Inspired This Patriotic Display

Vintage Wooden Box – $8

As I mentioned in my Thrifted 4th of July Porch Decor: Easy Patriotic Decorating Ideas on a Budget blog post, when I walked into the thrift store, it was as if all of the clutter disappeared and this gorgeous vintage wooden box was sitting there waiting for me. The rich dark stain immediately caught my eye, and I made a beeline straight for it with a huge smile on my face.

I very briskly walked over to it to snag it up with a huge smile on my face (no joke). It reminded me so much of the one my best friend, Kristin, had given to me as a moving gift from North Carolina when we moved to Wisconsin.

Blurry…but…thrift shopping and having a blast!

She and I used to spend every day together, while our adorable kiddos were either at school or we had mommy and me play dates. Literally, we were together all of the time, most people thought we were sisters (and our boys were twins!). I miss those days beyond measure…so that’s why I was so happy when I found this $8 wooden box!

I still have the box Kristin gave me displayed safely inside on my library shelves, but when I spotted this thrifted version for just $8, I knew it would be perfect for decorating my front porch. It had the same charming character and vintage feel, but I wouldn’t have to worry about exposing a treasured gift to the outdoor elements.

Needless to say, it came home with me – and of course I texted her a picture immediately!

Wooden American Flag Accent – $1.64

This little wooden American flag sign was just the right imperfectly perfect addition! I loved that it totally looks hand painted. The lines are straight-ish (notice the bottom, haha!) and that it had the curly wire and raffia attached.

It was small enough that I knew I could hang it off to the side of the wooden box and call it a day! …and for $1 buckaroo, I couldn’t say no!

Faux Grass Arrangement – $1.64

Talk about my lucky day at the thrift store! This adorable wooden based planter with faux grass that was a lovely shade of green and not overly fake looking was for sale for $1.64! I mean, come on, how could I have passed that up?

See, this is why I love thrift shopping…specifically for my porch! I don’t want to spend a lot of money on things that are going to be sitting outside all day and night long!

P.S. this really was just my lucky day, normally (especially at Goodwill) this would be much much more!

Styling the Patriotic Porch Display

In the corner of my porch, between my front door and the railing, I always have a little porch stool/table that I built years ago out of wooden spindles that I scooped up off of a Facebook Marketplace post titled, “Scrap wood for burning” —> ha!!! The hoarder in me said holy crap! No way should those things be burned, I’m on my way!! And yep, I scooped them all up and still have some leftover today (much to my husband’s dismay).

The top of the table I built with the wooden floor that was torn out of our attic during our house fire demolition.

DIY Wooden Porch Stool

Start with a Base Piece

The vintage wooden box became the foundation of this simple patriotic display. I placed it on top of a small porch stool to give it a little extra height and make it more visible from the street.

Add Height and Texture

Next, I tucked the faux grass arrangement inside the box. While it isn’t patriotic on its own, the greenery adds height, texture, and a natural element that helps the display feel fuller.

Layer in Patriotic Elements

To bring in the red, white, and blue, I hung the thrifted wooden American flag on the front of the box. The raffia bow added just the right amount of rustic charm and tied in perfectly with the vintage feel of the display.

Coordinate with Existing Porch Decor

I placed the arrangement next to my DIY Americana porch sign so the colors and materials would complement one another. Repeating similar colors and textures throughout the porch helps everything feel intentional and cohesive.
