How to Make a DIY 4th of July Wreath Using Thrift Store Flowers

With America celebrating its 250th birthday, I thought this was the perfect year to add a little extra patriotic charm to our front porch. Rather than buying a brand-new wreath, I headed to my favorite thrift store in search of red, white, and blue faux flowers that I could transform into a one-of-a-kind wreath.

Using a simple grapevine wreath form and a handful of thrifted floral stems, I created this DIY patriotic wreath that’s perfect for 4th of July decorating, Memorial Day, summer celebrations, or celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Here’s how I made it!

Why I Chose Thrift Store Flowers for This Patriotic Wreath

When I was putting together my thrifted patriotic porch decor, I came across several bunches of faux flowers in the perfect red, white, and blue color palette. Rather than spending a fortune at a craft store, I was able to create this wreath almost entirely from secondhand finds.

I love decorating for the 4th of July, but I also super love finding creative ways to decorate on a budget. This simple wreath became the perfect focal point for my front door and tied together all of the patriotic elements on my porch.

DIY 4th of July Wreath Tutorial

Step 1: Gather Red, White and Blue Faux Flowers

This is the fun part!! Shopping time! Time to find pretty faux flowers you can use for your wreath. Thrift stores are one of my favorite places to find inexpensive faux flowers for seasonal projects like DIY summer wreaths, patriotic centerpieces, and other budget-friendly patriotic decor.

Step 2: Prepare the Flowers

After bringing my thrift store flowers home, it was time to start making the wreath!

Instead of cutting through the metal stems, I simply pulled the flower heads off. Most faux flowers pop right off with a gentle tug, making this step quick and easy. Once all of the flowers were removed from their stems, I sorted them by color so I could easily arrange the red, white, and blue flowers around the wreath form.

Step 3: Arrange the Flowers on the Wreath Form

For this wreath, I wanted the finished design to resemble an American flag. I love incorporating Americana decor into our home during the summer months!

Since I was working with thrifted flowers, I only had a limited number of each color, so before attaching anything, I laid all of the flowers around the grapevine wreath.

This allowed me to make sure I had enough flowers to complete the design and helped me decide on the placement of each color. If I had run short on red or blue flowers, I planned to fill in with additional white flowers and create larger white sections. Luckily, I had just enough red, white, and blue flowers to bring my vision to life!

Step 4: Attach the Flowers with Hot Glue and Fill in Gaps

Once I was happy with the placement, I used a hot glue gun to attach each flower to the grapevine wreath. I added a small amount of hot glue to the back of the flower and pressed it firmly onto the wreath until the glue began to set.

I find hot glue to be the easiest way to attach flowers exactly where you want them. It’s also very forgiving! If you decide you don’t like the placement of a flower, or one happens to come loose over time, it’s an easy fix.

One of my favorite things about using hot glue is that the wreath can be repurposed later. Save your grapevine base so you can reuse it for future grapevine wreath ideas and seasonal decorating projects. Simply pull off the flowers and create an entirely new wreath for another season or holiday. I love finding ways to reuse and repurpose decor whenever I can!

Step 5: Add Finishing Touches

Once all of the flowers were attached, I stepped back and looked for any bare spots that needed a little extra attention. I used the smaller white flowers to fill in a few gaps and help define the red and blue sections of the wreath.

One thing I love about working with faux flowers is that you can easily move things around until you’re happy with the final look. After a few small adjustments, my patriotic wreath was ready to hang on the front door!

I couldn’t be happier with how this wreath turned out! The red, white, and blue flowers create the look of an American flag while still feeling soft, elegant, and welcoming. It adds the perfect touch of patriotic front door decor for the summer season.

Best of all, it was made almost entirely from thrift store finds, proving that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to create beautiful seasonal decor.

Decorating My Porch for the 4th of July

Once the wreath was finished, it became the centerpiece of my patriotic front porch display. I paired it with several other thrifted finds, including vintage-inspired Americana decor, flags, planters, and repurposed accessories.

The wreath added the perfect pop of color to our 1886 Victorian home and helped tie the entire display together.
