Coffee Chat | “The Snow Squall”

As I sit here this morning, typing this week’s edition of Coffee Chat, I’m compelled to tell you about the weather here in Wisconsin.

Yesterday evening, while painting a cute little nightstand I bought, we received an emergency weather alert on our phones about a “snow squall”.

I mean, what? I’ve never even heard of something like this! I know what a white squall is out in the ocean, thanks to the 1996 movie, “White Squall” that I very vividly remember seeing in the theaters in 6th grade (it was the first “adult-like” movie I saw in theaters). But what was a snow squall?

Well…I will tell you, because I survived the great “snow squall” of 2022 and can tell the tale! 🙂 haha!

Last night, my daughter and her friend went to the movie theater to see “Spiderman”…what that translates to = gawking over Tom Holland! haha! I was the designated parent to go pick them up, which, I’m actually super thankful for. Because if there is nothing else I have ever learned from my mother, I did learn one thing! Never risk the safety of your precious cargo! Who cares how long it takes to get someplace as long as you make it in one piece!

I picked the girls up and then attempted to get them Panera (but they closed at 2pm??). While in the Panera parking lot, the wind and snow starting picking up like crazy so I knew we needed to get our hineys’ home. We hopped on the highway and almost instantly the weather turned so quickly that I legit could not see out the window, nor could the girls.

I have never driven in such a whiteout before! It was terrifying.

I didn’t want to pull over on the side of the highway and risk getting hit, so I did my best to navigate to the nearest exit, which wasn’t even 1 mile away. We came crawling up the exit ramp, literally praying we would not go off the road … when I tell you you could not see, I truly mean you could not see a single thing until you were right up on it.

Thankfully I was able to get us safely to a grocery store in Kohler, where we sat in my van and recomposed. We went inside, bought food and waited out the storm until the grocery store closed at 8pm.

The weather apps said that the “snow squall” was moving out by that point, so I made the decision to get back on the highway to drive home.

While the conditions were good for the most part, there were areas where the wind and snow blew off of the farmer’s fields (that run along the highway) and made it absolutely impossible to see the road and we were almost completely stopped on the highway. At my fastest speed, I went 35mph in a 65!

Obviously, it should go without saying, I was super happy when I pulled in our driveway. Isn’t it funny how being “home” can instantly change your feelings. I felt safe. I feel our home has so many emotions mixed into it. … being a place we needed to escape from when it was struck by lightning and caught fire…to now, being glad I made it back to it during a snow squall. This home sure is interesting in the most peculiar ways to me.

Have you ever been in a “snow squall”? What was your experience like? Tell me in the comments!

You brought back memories. I was born and grew up in northern Wisconsin and I remember many times of white outs. Just as you are saying, and when the snow is wet when it hits your windshield your wipers get coated with ice, on country roads there are no places to pull over so you do your best to jump out clear them off before you see headlights right behind you. Another time I hit a big snowdrift that was across the road that I couldn’t see. When I hit it, it come up on the hood of my car, I couldn’t see anything but I made it home safe. An house later a family got stuck in that spot, they walked to our house, my dad got out our tractor to pull them out. Soon after that a large milk truck got stuck and the driver came again to have my dad get the john deere to pull him out. By the way I now live in Washington state and I watched your storm on Ashland, Bayfield, and Duluth web cameras. You did forget about the cold. You have really gotten a lot of it. In a way I do miss it. Spring is coming.

    1. Hi Rita!! Wow!!! You certainly have had your fair share of crazy snow storms!! Yikes! Glad you were safe each time…and it sounds like your dad sure was a snow rescuer!!! That is so awesome!

The cold….!!! YES!!! I didn’t even mention that. We really have had a super cold winter! I’m so ready for some spring days!!
