Dollar Tree Wooden Pumpkin Porch Sign
I absolutely love making wooden porch signs to sit outside of my front door to make my house look pretty and loved…not really to welcome guests! HAHA! I’m a firm believer that a pretty porch is important. It’s the first view someone has of your house, why not make a good impression.
Also…because I’ve watched way too many ‘Dateline’ episodes with my husband, if I’m ever stranded and in need of help…you better believe I’ll be looking for a house that looks like it has nice people inside based off of their porch decor! 😂

Repurposing Porch Signs
A few years ago, back during Covid, I made a “Stay Home” porch sign to sit on our front porch. I made it because I needed a creative outlet. We were stuck living in a 2 bedroom apartment because our beautiful 1886 Victorian house had been struck by lightning and was in the rebuilding phase, so we were SUPER cooped up when Covid hit.

I wasn’t bothered with having to stay home, I was more sad and frustrated that I couldn’t be at my own home, with my own stuff! That was the hard part! … especially because I’m a bit of a craft supply hoarder! I just wanted all of my craft supplies and spend my long hours creating beautiful decor for the house we had just moved across the country to three months prior!
The good thing is, that is all in the past! We have moved back home and I have fun every year decorating my porch with new and old treasures and handmade items! Yay!!
Fall is definitely trying to visit Wisconsin right now…the crisp, cool air is setting in at night and the early mornings and the leaves starting to change colors!! But the days are still warm and sunny! Thank goodness because I’m in no rush for winter!!
With the changing colors, I really wanted to change out my spring/summer front porch decor to match the season. I had one goal in mind…do not buy anything new! I wanted to repurpose what I had and give my porch a fresh look for Fall.
That’s where the sign I built a few years ago came in. I definitely did not need a wooden sign that said “Stay Home” anymore, so I enlisted my little guy to help me makeover the wooden sign by giving it a fresh new coat of paint. We first painted it with Dixie Belle ‘Terra Cotta’ , a beautiful shade of creamy orange, let it dry and then put it outside on the porch.
Unfortunately, when I stuck it outside, I didn’t love it. It just didn’t “pop”. The orange looked too washed out against my burnt red orange trim on my house.
Sometimes DIY projects just don’t look the way you had hoped they would…so you have to redo them! And that’s OK! Sometimes that that fun part of a project you do yourself. You make something over until you’re pefectly happy with it!
So, my son helped me again! We gave the sign another coat of paint, this time with Dixie Belle ‘In The Navy’, a dark, rich navy color. I absolutely loved the way that the navy looked against my greenish/blue house. It was the perfect complimenting color!
After the paint dried, I grabbed a white pumpkin door hanger that I had purchased at Dollar Tree and hung it on a nail on the painted door sign. The rustic look of the distressed wood finish on the pumpkin, along with a black and white buffalo check ribbon and a metal leaf accent, really added a nice farmhouse touch.
I love buying various door hangers from Dollar Tree because the shape is usually just perfect…but sometimes the lettering isn’t. Which, makes another fun DIY project! Like this sign I bought and painted to add to my Fall sunflower wreath that’s hanging on my front door!
I styled the rest of my front entryway with a small stool I had built out of scrap wood, faux flowers I purchased at my local thrift store, faux pumpkins from Walmart, wood bead garland that I made, and another sign I painted using chalk paint and scrap wood.
I really love how everything tuned out! It’s just enough “cozy” for the changing seasons!…before it all gets swapped out with Halloween decor for my Halloween porch.
Creating beautiful porch decor doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It’s all about working with what you have and finding new ways to repurpose old items—just like I did with my revamped wooden porch sign! With a few coats of paint, and a Dollar Tree pumpkin, I was able to breathe new life into a project I made years ago.
So, grab some paint, make a pumpkin spice latte, and get crafty! See what you can transform! Don’t forget to share your own porch creations in the comments below—I’d love to see how you bring fall vibes to your home!
