DIY Fall Decor | Repurposing Plastic Easter Eggs
In the world of crafting, the magic of “repurposing” can turn even the simplest items into seasonal treasures – like these repurposed old sweaters I turned into holiday throw pillows or these repurposed Christmas cards we turned into Thank You cards.
A few days ago, my friend, Angela, sent me an image on Instagram, which in turn sparked this creative craft idea to help me add some Thanksgiving flair to my fall decor! The repurposed item…none other than plastic Easter eggs!
While typically this time of year, my plastic Easter eggs are safely tucked away in a Rubbermaid container in my attic, all snug for their long winters nap, I decided to pull them out and do some repurposing!

You may be thinking, what can you possibly do with plastic eggs, especially for fall? In the past, I’ve turned them into an adorable Plastic Easter Egg Wreath or made Tie-Dye Shaving Cream Easter Eggs with paper eggs.

This time, I wanted to give the plastic Easter eggs a fall twist so I could use them as part of my decor on my coffee bar. So I grabbed my favorite chalk paint, some jute twine from Dollar Tree, and a hot glue gun and got busy transforming those colorful plastic eggs into brown and tan hanging acorns!
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- Gather supplies
- Paint plastic eggs
- Speed up the drying process by using a heat gun
- Tie a loop on one end of a piece of twine
- Place a dap of hot glue on the top of the plastic egg rounded piece (the smaller one) and adhere the twine, ensuring that the loop is on top **be careful not to burn yourself with the hot glue!
- Bead a line of hot glue and begin wrapping the twine around the egg until you’ve reached the bottom
- Glue the two pieces of plastic egg together
- Bead another line of glue and wrap the twine more or two more times around the egg, ensuring that the gap between the two pieces is covered. Cut the twine and hang!

Once I had crafted all the acorns, I threaded them onto a long piece of jute twine, essentially creating a charming strand of garland. I then carefully draped it along the fabric swag hanging from the shelf above my espresso maker.

I think it looks so cute! Dainty but just big enough to be noticed. The earthy tan and brown tones of the acorns pair beautifully with the warm oranges and yellows in the fabric swag.

It’s such a simple detail that adds to the fall flair I have going on over the coffee bar. The warm colors bring that seasonal charm right into one of my favorite spots in the house, the kitchen!!!…my green kitchen that we gutted and rebuilt all by ourselves!

Whether I’m brewing up my daily americano or indulging in a pumpkin spice latte, this little addition brings an extra touch of my favorite season to my daily coffee ritual. It love how such a small, repurposed piece of plastic can be transformed to make it feel more festive and ready for fall!

Overall the project took me less than 1 hour…and that includes the drying time for the paint. That is totally my kind of project…quick, simple and fun! These were definitely fun little acorns to make!
