Brown Sugar French Toast
This past Saturday Lover Boy and I decided to go on a short drive over to Aiken, South Carolina for dinner.

We didn’t have a place in mind, we figured we’d pick something out while walking around. We ended at Davor Café. It was a quaint little restaurant right located in the alley with indoor and outdoor seating. We chose to sit outside because from the looks of it it was a fancy restaurant and we didn’t want the kids to get rowdy inside if the food took long . We were seated and indeed it was a “fancy” restaurant. They only had one high chair and no cups with lids…but my kids are fairly used to this so they did great!
The menu was out of this world amazing! I would have ordered every.single.dish. We started off with a clam, lobster bisqué which all four of us loved! Typically LB and I do not order the same thing because that way we can try other dishes BUT we made the exception this time. We both got the Pistachio Butter Rubbed Salmon with Peach & Pepper Glaze over Risotto with Asparagus…OH.MY.GOSH! I definitely had a glimpse of Heaven with this meal. It was so good I couldn’t stop eating.

ANYWAY…I was talking to the girl who makes the bread and asked her what she put in it. Long story short she told me how she makes her french toast. She uses brown sugar. Am I the only one who has never heard of this or what? I decided to try my hand at it this morning with my helper Little Finch. Here’s what we came up with.
Option One:

Option Two:

Recipe for 4 pieces of French Toast-
Start by cracking one egg into a shallow dish

Whisk it a bit

Add in 1/3c milk

Add 1tbs of brown sugar

A little bit of cinnamon and whisk

Heat a large skillet and butter er it!

Dip the bread in the egg mixture on both sides and make sure you let all of the excess egg mixture run off otherwise you’ll have cooked eggs on your toast!

Sprinkle more cinnamon on top of the egg mixture before you dip the second piece of bread

Place on skillet and cook all of the way through, slowly over a medium low temperature so the middle isn’t soggy. Sprinkle more cinnamon on the top of the bread (note: see that corner piece? I didn’t get all of the excess egg mixture off…opps!)

My FAVORITE restuart in Toledo, OH (where Lover Boy and I went to college) was Café Marie’s. We used to go there all of the time and get breakfast! My favorite breakfast there was their Rocky Top French Toast. They sprinkle big chunky granola on top…so I pulled out what I had in the panty and topped my pieces this morning!

Rather than syrup we used Agave. YUM!

Everyone really liked breakfast this morning! Phew!

Yes those are measuring spoons he is using to scoop up the agave! Kids!
Happy Breakfast!

Stopping by from Serenity Now. The french toast looks wonderful! We will have to try it next weekend – yum. We live in NC and also love trying new restaurants with the kids in tow. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
