Recipe Inspiration

For Christmas one year, my hubby surprised me with a Vitamix A3500 blender! I may or may not have stumbled upon it in a hiding spot before Christmas … ha! Turns out we both decided to hide presents in the same pile of clothes! I think it goes to say, great minds think alike! LOL!

The Vitamix sure came in handy when we did a 7 day cleanse to kick off the new year. I was able to make smoothies , soups and even hummus! At the conclusion of our cleanse, we decided to have a homemade pizza night! I made homemade pizza dough for the kiddos and homemade cauliflower pizza dough for my hubby and I.

We topped our pizzas with this simple homemade pizza sauce, made effortlessly in the Vitamix. This no-sugar pizza sauce is a staple in our kitchen—tried, tested, and family-approved—and I know you’ll love it just as much!

Ingredients for the Best Homemade Pizza Sauce (No Sugar Added!)

  • tomato paste – this is sold typically in two different containers; in a tube or in a can. The amount of tomato paste I need for a recipe determines whether I buy it in a tube or a can
  • tomatoes – fresh, on-the-vine tomatoes work best for this sauce to create an authentic fresh tomato pizza sauce with vibrant flavor
  • garlic – fresh cloves
  • basil – if you’re able to find fresh basil, go that route, if not, swap it out for dried basil
  • onion – I always use sweet onions because they help balance the acidity of the tomatoes
  • extra virgin olive oil – I prefer “smooth” rather than “robust” for a lighter taste
  • oregano – dried oregano is fine! If you have fresh, go ahead and use that instead

Step-by-Step: How to Make Pizza Sauce in a Vitamix

The process starts by sautéing the onions, garlic, and spices on the stovetop to develop rich flavors. Next, tomato paste and fresh tomatoes are added, allowing the sauce to simmer until the ingredients are tender and well combined. Once the sauce has thickened and cooled slightly, it is carefully poured into the Vitamix blender, where it is blended until smooth and velvety. This quick blending process ensures a perfectly creamy, well-incorporated pizza sauce with no chunks—just pure, delicious flavor!

1️⃣ Dice the onion and mince the garlic
2️⃣ Heat the olive oil in a pot over medium heat
3️⃣ Sauté onions and garlic until softened and fragrant

5️⃣ Mix in the tomato paste and cook for a minute to deepen the flavor
6️⃣ Add chopped fresh tomatoes, then cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until softened
7️⃣ Remove from heat and let the sauce cool slightly
8️⃣ Carefully transfer the mixture to your Vitamix blender
9️⃣ Blend on high speed until the sauce reaches a smooth, velvety consistency

If your fresh tomato pizza sauce is too thin, it’s likely due to the water content in fresh tomatoes, which can vary depending on the type and ripeness. The best way to thicken homemade pizza sauce is to let it simmer longer on the stovetop to allow excess moisture to evaporate. You can also stir in a spoonful of tomato paste for a richer, thicker consistency. If needed, strain out some of the liquid before blending for an even thicker sauce.
