Wall Gallery Options

I’ve been slowly updating our family room, and this wall has been one of the biggest challenges. With 12-foot ceilings, it’s hard to know where to start, so I wanted to share my real-life process for figuring out a gallery wall that works.

The Challenge of Decorating a Tall Wall

Our family room is one of the main gathering spaces in our home, so I want it to feel cozy and inviting. But with 12-foot high ceilings and such a large empty wall, it’s been hard to figure out the best photo wall layout. I want something that fills the space without overwhelming it — and it needs to match the overall feel of the room.

The height makes it tricky — how far up should you hang decor? And how do you make sure your pieces don’t look too small on such a big wall?

Tips for Decorating 12-Foot Walls

A few things I’ve learned so far while planning my photo wall layout:

  • Mixing different frame sizes helps fill the space without feeling too uniform
  • Incorporating shelves or ledges breaks up the wall and gives me flexibility to swap out decor later
  • Using oversized art or a statement piece (like a large clock) helps anchor the layout and keep it from looking too small

Putting together these wall gallery options has been so much fun, but I’d love your input before I start hanging frames. I’m aiming for a layout that balances photos, art, and maybe a few personal touches — so if you have any other gallery wall ideas, I’m all ears!

Update: Update: I hung the gallery and I love how it turned out! It was definitely a learning experience figuring out how to space everything on such a tall wall, but I’m so happy with the final result.
