The Cascades Trail: Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 271.9
Our kiddos were on Spring Break this past week – we were planning on heading to the coast but there were bad storms all weekend so we decided to head to the mountains instead.
We’ve spent so much time along the Blue Ridge Parkway (we’ve completed the entire parkway, 469 miles – and repeated a majority of it several times over), especially since we live pretty close to it. But there are so many hikes along the parkway that we are still working on checking them off!
We first stopped at Mast General Store and then decided to give The Cascades Trail a try! It was such a great trail that the kids were all able to hike it on their own … and best of all, never once complained! HA! In fact, they all said that it was the “shortest hike we’ve ever done in their entire lives!” LOL. These kids have definitely had their fair share of hiking in their lifetimes!

Along the trail are posts educating hikers of the trees and other various plants.

Overall the hike was really fun. It was easy enough for little kids but was still challenging on the super steep rock steps. Early on in the hike the trail runs really close to big drop offs – which had me a little freaked because the kids were having fun and running.
All in all, I would highly recommend this hike for families to check out! The views are gorgeous and you’ll definitely be glad that you had an easy route to such scenic sights!
If you’re in the area and completed this trail, why not head South on the Blue Ridge Parkway and get off in Valle Crucis, NC (17 miles from Boone, NC) and check out one of the oldest operating country stores, Mast General Store. It’s such a neat experience that you won’t want to miss!
