Mast General Store, Valle Crucis, NC: Blue Ridge Parkway
Our kids have been on Spring Break so we decided to head to the mountains and spend the day in some of our favorite spots. One of them being Mast General Store as well as The Cascades Trail. If you’ve ever traveled along the Blue Ridge Parkway before you know that there is not much in the way of stores, restaurants, gas (lol) along the Parkway. In fact, you really need to get off of the Parkway in order to have any civilization really. The Parkway is simply 469 miles of uninterrupted beauty with windy, curvy roads with gorgeous overlooks. It’s definitely a must-see destination. **located only 17 minutes from Boone, NC! (another must-see).
A few years back, in the fall, we traveled the entire length of the Parkway and tent camped along the way. It was amazing! One of the places we stopped was called Mast General Store. This old historic store was built in 1883 and is one of the best remaining examples of an old country general store. Inside they sell everything from candy to woodworking supplies to fresh baked bread and pies. There is an old wood stove that you can sit around and play checkers with coke bottle caps. It even functions as a USPS Post Office with the old mailboxes inside. Once you’re ready to check out with your goodies you can sit out on the back porch in a rocking chair or porch swing and overlook the gorgeous mountain views. It’s a really authentic place that I would highly recommend visiting!

Mast General Store is located close to some major stopping points along the Blue Ridge Parkway – Moses H Cone Memorial Park, Banner Elk, Boone, Grandfather Mountain State Park (awesome swaying bridge) and our all time favorite, Blowing Rock (adorable little mountain town)!
All of these locations are along the Blue Ridge Parkway:
It would be impossible to not enjoy an old timey glass bottle of pop (or as they say in the south, coke)
Also on the property is a an old red school house which is now a shoe store…like the absolute coolest and neatest shoes! Lots are Keens and outdoorsy shoes – but they are fun and unique! Totally up my alley!
If you’re up along the Blue Ridge Parkway I highly suggest stopping in to this cute little time wrap of a store! You’ll surely enjoy your time there!
Once your done visiting the store hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head North to this great and easy hiking trail: The Cascades Trail: Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 271.9.
