Christkindlmarket, Chicago, Illinois
Christkindlmarket is an outdoor Christmas-themed vendor event inspired by the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany, which began in 1545. The Christkindlmarket Chicago is one of the most authentic German Christmas markets in Chicago, bringing a cherished German and European tradition with international flair and local charm to Daley Plaza in the Chicago Loop every holiday season.

Ever since I was a little girl, my family has had a long tradition of riding the commuter train into the city of Chicago from the suburbs and go to Macys to visit Santa and eat at The Walnut Room. It’s my most favorite tradition that we’ve continued on with my kids every year.
We usually stop by the Christkindlmarket either while we are waiting for our dinner reservations at the Walnut Room or on our way back to Ogilvie train station to head home.

Location
The market takes place at the Daley Plaza in the Chicago Loop between Dearborn, Washington and Clark Street.
If you’re in Chicago between Thanksgiving and Christmas, a visit to Christkindlmarket is an absolute must! Nestled in the heart of downtown, an entire city block transforms into a charming European-style Christmas market, complete with festively decorated wooden huts that feel straight out of Germany.

Vendors from Germany sell beautifully handcrafted items, from intricate ornaments to cozy handmade gifts. And of course, no visit is complete without indulging in the market’s delicious offerings – warm spiced Glühwein in a collectible mug, freshly baked pretzels, and sweet holiday treats. It’s the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit!

Glühwein, Beer and Hot Chocolate Drinks
The best part about visiting Christkindlmarket? Getting a keepsake mug—often shaped like a little boot – from one of the many Glühwein vendors! The line is usually long, and you’ll need cash to pay, but trust me, it’s worth the wait.
There’s just something about sipping warm spiced wine (or hot chocolate for the kids!) from a festive mug that makes the whole experience feel extra special. We’ve collected mugs from several years, and they always bring back the best holiday memories!

Schnitzel, Bavarian Pretzels and Desserts
After braving the long line for Glühwein, it’s time to queue up again—this time for some delicious food! Whether it’s a crispy pork schnitzel, a giant Bavarian pretzel, or a warm crepe piled high with whipped cream, the wait is all part of the experience.
There’s something about standing in the cold, surrounded by twinkling lights and holiday cheer, that makes every bite taste even better. It’s the perfect way to soak in the festive atmosphere of downtown Chicago on a chilly winter day or night!

Vendors
The market is full of little vendors selling the most unique items inspired by various places around the world.
