DIY Shelf & Hook Board

DIY Shelf & Hook Board for the beginner building. Simple and easy!

The other day the fabulous ladies over at Shanty-2-Chic created this Key Hook Decor Shelf. The second I read through their tutorial I knew I just HAD to make one for Laughing Coyote’s bedroom. We had the beadboard left over from a project at our old house so that was a plus right off of the bat! I wanted to make my board bigger than what their board was though so I ended up having to buy some new 1×3’s (only $1.57 for a 8ft board so it wasn’t bad at all!)

Lover Boy was out of town cruising up the coast on his Harley Weekend Road Trip so once the kids were in bed (which is anytime after 10pm at our house…mercy on me I know!) I got to work in the garage! I swear my neighbors must think I’m a bit psycho (or maybe annoying) for running my saws so.late.at.night! …ehhh! (I finished at 3:45am! – that is why the lighting is so off in these photos).

After I made my board (see their tutorial on the how-to) it looked like this:

All assembled. Wood supplies that I used: 1×3 (frame) 1×4 (shelf) beadboard (backing)
I was worried that the shelf wouldn’t stay attached with just nails so I used the jigsaw to cut out pieces in the frame to make the shelf more secure
I painted it with this…Color = Uniform Blue, Hobby Lobby .69 cents (I was trying to go off of memory the color of a decorative paddle we already have for his room is)
All painted
I grabbed whatever sandpaper I could find in the garage and cut about 1/3 off. ***FYI – If you ever need to sharpen scissors this is how you do it!
Next I wrapped the sandpaper around a scrap piece of wood and created my own sanding block
I roughed up the edges and various other parts of the board for a more rustic look
Miniwax Stain – Color = Dark Walnut
I stained using an old rag
And just rubbed it all over the board and wiping it almost all off. I applied the stain heavier in areas I wanted to appear more distressed
I bought these hooks at Wal-Mart but it was $1 cheaper each hook to buy the gold. I already had a can of bronze spray paint at home so I decided I would just spray them and save the money! I had bought embellishment knobs from Hobby Lobby (you’ll see in a second) but their screws were just a tad too big to go through these holes…so I pulled out the drill and a bit that was the size of the embellishments and made the hole bigger!
Next I measured and predrilled where the hooks would go
Ta da!
This was the paddle I was talking about. I wanted it to be close in color (it’s really not going to stay on the shelf, at least I don’t think so right now)  –It wasn’t hanging at this point because the screws from my wood knobs were too long. Our Dremel tool isn’t working so I was unable to trim them flush with the nut and washer. However!!!!-the next day our neighbor had a guy working in the yard laying some paving stones and I spotted him using a Dremel! Perfect! I worked up the guts and went out and asked him if he would mind cutting the screws for me. He did it! (Lover Boy was mad at me and said that I seemed “floozy” and I said “who cares! It got the job done, didn’t it?!?) 🙂
I got the wood lookalike knobs (I think they are ceramic) at Hobby Lobby (50% off)
I think it turned out really cute! What do you think?

Thanks Shanty-2-Chic for the inspiration!! I challenge you to go on and make one for your house now!
