Royal icing is a frosting used to decorate sugar cookies, cakes, gingerbread houses and more. Royal icing can be made with or without meringue powder and can be made ahead of time or stored in the freezer.

Separate egg whites from yolks. Discard egg yolks and put egg whites in a mixing bowl. Measure out 3 ounces (typically around 3 eggs)

Mix egg whites with hand held mixer with whisk attachment until light and fluffy

Add 1/2 tsp  cream of tartar

Add 4 cups powdered sugar

Mix until you reach a toothpaste-like consistency

Add food coloring to royal icing and mix
