How To Heal Dry Skin Naturally

Today is going to be more of a public service announcement about a topic very near and dear to my heart…my oldest son who is 3 1/2 years old. I want to share this with you today because I know that so many young kids “suffer” from Eczema and/or Allergies. So from one mommy to another, here’s how we finally combated my son’s Eczema aka dry skin.

PIN this now to save for later!

Ever since he was 1 year old he has had dry skin.

He’s seen three different doctors in different states (because we’ve moved so much) and each time the doctor says he has mild Eczema / very dry skin (he never had the “typical eczema patches”). So, they prescribe hydrocortisone creams and recommend different types of store brand lotions each time. Each time we’d find no relief. My little guy would end up super itchy and scratches his skin so bad on his forearms, legs and back that he would actually break the skin and it would bleed.  So the cycle would begin all over: go back to the doctor, get a new prescription and a new lotion. Apply for a few days/weeks with him screaming and crying because everything burned his skin. It was seriously so miserable. I always dreaded putting him in shorts and short sleeved shirts because I never wanted someone to question “what happened?” – and unfortunately a few times people did.

Anyway, a few weeks ago his skin started getting all red and splotchy and he became super itchy. I took him back to the doctor and this time they prescribed Zyrtec and another hydrocortisone cream. That day we also did Allergy Testing because I figured there had to be an underlying cause to this.

Needless to say, I did not get the prescription for Zyrtec or hydrocortisone cream filled. By no means do I feel comfortable giving my 3 year old Zyrtec!!! I just decided to wait and see what the Allergy test results were and then would figure out something from there – in the meantime I started researching dry skin conditions like a crazy person!

A few days later the nurse called me to give me the results. Low and behold he DID NOT have allergies. I was very insistent on the fact that OK then what’s the problem?!?! I explained over and over again that the methods we’d been using for the past two years were not working and that in fact, on my son’s arms you could see pigment changes from using hydrocortisone for so long (a side effect is thinning of the skin and changing the pigmentation). I asked what can we do now? She told me she had to talk to the doctor and call me back. Sigh. So I waited for her to call me back, only to be told to “just use the Zyrtec and hydrocortisone cream. There’s nothing else to do”.

As you can imagine, this did not sit very well with me. I suppose I could have found another different doctor, but lets face it –  how much longer, how much more money, how many more painful days for my son would we have to go through? I basically called it quits and decided that since I care the most for him, I would be able to figure it out on my own.

So again, I hit the computer researching for HOURS! I looked into vitamin deficiencies, other allergies, cleaners, etc. (*I have used Melaleuca cleaners since before any of my kids were born. I am 100% on board to not exposing them to any more toxins than necessary).

Anyway, I found this amazing article about Skin and Vitamin Deficiencies and was really focusing on these few symptoms they had listed (along with MANY others)

Symptom

Deficiency / Treatment / Cause

Dry Skin vitamins A, C, EFA
Eczema, skin ulcers vitamin C, B2, B6, zinc, magnesium, EFA, allergy test, cleanse
Eczema, infantile EPA, zinc, vitamin B6
Infant dermatitis with inflamed pustules around body openings vitamin B6, zinc
Itching vitamins B, C, EFA, alkalizer, bicarbonate rubs, (allergy tests)
Rash allergy test, alkalizers, vitamin C, calcium
Sensitivity to insect bites vitamin C, B1, calcium, alkalizers, bicarbonate rub/bath

Basically, after reading through the list, I figured there’s a good chance that a vitamin deficiency could be the problem – after all, he’s 3 years old and not the best eater. So then I started researching vitamins. I came across the Landmark Study done by Berkely University and went through their list of vitamins. Shaklee was ranked #2 on the list. I knew of the company Shaklee but hadn’t used any of their products. I decided to research them and after many long hours of comparing, looking up terms I wasn’t familiar with, calculating the price, etc. I decided I was going to give them a chance. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose – except maybe a few dollars…but after all, I was used to this. We had spent hundreds of dollars over the years between the MANY doctors appointments, prescriptions, lotions, essential oils, health food products (coconut oil), etc.

I decided to order Shaklee Children’s Vitamins, Shaklee Probiotic, and Shaklee Baby Lotion and Shaklee Baby Massage Oil. The day my order came in I took pictures of my son’s chest. It was all red and patchy and he was super itchy! 4 days later I took the same picture. I was beyond amazed and overjoyed with how his skin looked!

Below you can see for yourself the difference!

How to Heal Eczema and Dry Skin NaturallyIn ONLY four days  (which only consisted of taking his vitamins and probiotic 4 times (1 each per day), applying the Massage Oil 1 time, and the Soothing Lotion 2 times! INCREDIBLE!!! Seriously, you have no idea how happy I was and still am!! ***I have learned that through more extensive research that the Shaklee Mighty Smarts (DHA for kids) will help eliminate the inflammation – which is technically what eczema is, inflammation.

Below is just a sampling of all of the products and prescriptions we tried. None of them worked – except the Shaklee products!!

Shaklee Eczema Testimony: How To Heal Eczema Naturally

I mean really it’s incredible! My son is SO MUCH happier because his skin isn’t bothering him anymore…and I am SO MUCH happier because I finally found something that works and is SAFE for his skin!

Shaklee ProbioticShaklee Optiflora Probiotic Complex

The reason I would only suggest Shaklee’s probiotic is because of all of the research that went into making them to ensure that live flora is delivered to your gut (p.s. did you know that 70% of your immune system lives in your gut?)

shaklee optiflora probiotic

The capsule is so teeny tiny – even babies can take it. The capsule has 3 layers of protection to ensure that it is not destroyed by the stomach acid…you can soak the capsule for a few minutes in water or juice and peel off the outermost layer and then give to baby – it will be soft and gummy, easy for them to swallow. Here is a picture of how tiny it is.

Thanks for sharing. So many children suffer and parents don’t know what to do.

  3. Overjoyed at the results we too have received with Shaklee!

  4. Hi, your article appeared in my facebook stream. My 2 year old daughter has exczema too and like you said, we go through ridiculous expensive rituals every day to keep it under control (not to mention prescription stuff). She does have a food allergy to nuts but she doesn’t eat them so I dont think thats the cause. Why did you order the probiotic is my question?

    1. Hi Erica!
I’m so sorry you’re going through the horrible rounds of eczema too…it stinks!!
I chose a probiotic because…70% – 80% of your immunity is in your gut.You can read more about gut flora here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gut_flora
It helps with inflammation and that is essneitally what ezcema is.
Grains and dairy cause inflammation within your body – quite a bit of eczema is caused too by allergies…many people have aversions to both grains and/or dairy.
The best part of why I chose Shaklee’s probiotic was because it’s SUPER small! Like smaller than a pearl. My son can swallow it with no problem. Also, it is triple encapsulated making sure the “good stuff” makes it all of the way to the actual gut rather than being destroyed by the stomach acid. Shaklee has done extensive research on this to make sure they provide the absolute best product! If you’d like, I can set you up with a nurse on my team who can help explain it even further (absolutely free of charge and no pressure to buy AT ALL!)

  5. I’m curious. The study you cited regarding vitamins by Shaklee ranking #2 was for adults. Did their child vitamins rank that high in a study? Are their vitamins whole food vitamins?

    1. Yes that study was for adults…but from seeing their name on the list as #2 I knew they must be a good company…so I did further research and then found out that indeed they were. I actually made a powerpoint slide regarding the difference between Flinstones (what I was giving my kids) compared to Shaklee’s Incredivites. I will email it to you 🙂

  6. Rhonda McCallum Woodman says:

Thank you Stephanie. When you have a photo of his skin completely healed will you upload it? Thanks

    1. sure!! it’s basically already all healed..not even 1.5 weeks later!!

  7. Thank you for sharing your story, there simply is nothing better than Shaklee!!

  8. When did you use the lotion? When did you use the oil?

    1. Hi Carrie!

I used the oil after baths and the lotion on days he didn’t take a bath. But you can apply the oil and then the lotion on top of it as well if you want. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Do you have the oil and the lotion?

  10. I went on the Shaklee website and all baby stuff is unavailable.
My 1 year old is suffering from eczema on her face. It is all around her eyes and mouth. It is more red and irritated, not so much dry patches. Her doctor insists it’s eczema, so I’m taking his word for it. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Melissa – Yes I’m sorry the baby line is unavailable for a short time right now…however, I would definitely have many more things to recommend – I will email you from the email provided!

  11. Hi Stephanie,
I just had a quick question for you. I’ve been using the Shaklee line for a while now and love everything, but I was just curious can I give my 1 year old the vitamins and how much should I give him? I am just a bit cautious because the label says for 4-12 years of age. Thanks!

    1. Does he have teeth? How are you giving it to him? I would do only half of a tablet per day 🙂

  12. Lynn Anderson says:

All I can say is “Wowza”!!! I have taken Shaklee products for 38 years…I will say that nothing is more important than your “gut health”… Nothing….Shaklee has the best products..Its important to put the best products into your system….Shaklee will elevate you to a whole new level…..You will not be disappointed….

  13. Stephanie, my almost 2 yr old daughters both suffer from eczema. One takes 1/3 of the mighty smart, 1 whole incredivite, and 1 pearl per day. She’s allergic to dairy, so no dairy in her diet. She is still inflamed and itchy, especially when she gets nervous or mad. My other daughter won’t take any of the vitamins so I was putting citriboost in her bottles. She gets itchy when she’s mad and nervous as well. Any other tips or shaklee products you think they should take? I need to put an order in tonight.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Emily, just saw this. Omegas are very important for reducing inflammation. Rather than giving her 1/3 of the Mighty Smart, give her a whole one or even better squeeze a whole Omega Guard into her drink or food.

  14. Hi! Been browsing stuff about eczema and I saw ur post.
My one year old has eczema and it’s gotten worse, it’s all over his body now. Just like u, we’ve been through a lot of creams, lotions and steroid creams. I would like to try the shaklee and hoping it’ll help with my son too.
How’s ur son now? Is the eczema all gone? Since this is an old post I’m hoping he’s all healed now. Did u use shaklee all this time?
I hope to hear from u.
    Thank u!

    Hello,
I really love the experience you shared with your son and his eczema. Is he still doing well with it? Have you had any adults have luck treating their eczema with these products? I have pretty bad eczema on my hands that developed when I was pregnant with my 2nd child and it has never gone away. I am like you and have spent so much money on creams and lotions and hate to use a steroid cream because of the long term effect it has on skin. Just wondering if you have any success with adult cases and what you recommend using. Thanks. Kami Boyd

    1. yes absolutely! having a very good multivitamin and fish oil is key. fish oil = omegas = reduce inflammation … eczema = inflammation. Also using all non-toxic cleaners (laundry, dish soap, window cleaner, etc) is very important. our skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything. shaklee has all of these products – which i personally use. another product to consider is Calming Complex by shaklee as well. The results are amazing with this! Please feel free to email me to ask more questions. (my email is listed in my about page). in the meantime, you can learn more about these products at http://www.gatheredinthekitchen.myshaklee.com hope you can find relief soon!!

  16. Thanks for sharing. My twelve year old has started having terrible eczema break outs this past year. The doctor’s first response is always a steroid. We discovered this summer that Aloe Vera based lotion heals his eczema. I do feel like he may have a food allergy, or be vitamin deficient. Checking out Shaklee today!

    1. best of luck to you!! hoping you find all of the answers you are looking for! please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

  17. Hello, I am a mom of a 5 year old and your eczema story just sounds so similiar to ours. I have been searching for answers for over 3 years and everything I have tried like you did not work. My sons eczema is just really dry skin so dry to the point his shirt is full of flakes when he takes it off. I have been searching for a miracle. We have tried every cream on the shelf every prescribed cream and Zyrtec and we are still battling this eczema. I’m hoping that after reading your post and giving this a try( because like u said, what have I got to lose) that it will miraculously turn my sons skin around and help him live his childhood without being so dry. Thank you for sharing

    1. So sorry you’re going through this! please let me know if I can help in any way! Hope he seems major improvements!

  18. Priscilla says:

    Hi Stephanie
Your story sounds so similar to ours. My son is 9 months old and has had eczema since he was 2 months old. We have bought literally everything and used tube after tube of prescription strength hydrocortisone with no relief whatsoever. I just ordered all 4 shaklee products you used and hope and pray that it helps. It’s so heartbreaking when I can’t do anything to relieve the itching and flare-ups my little one has. Thanks for sharing your story!

    1. Hi Priscilla, I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. I pray it helps your son! My son just turned 9 years old and is still doing absolutely fantastic!!! Hope you will have the same success!!
