Couponing Lesson

A few months ago one of my friends and I attended a “Couponing Class” presented by Jenny at Southern Savers. Wow! Did we learn a lot. Before this class I literally had used maybe four coupons in my entire life. I actually always thought they were stupid and a waste of time. But after realizing how much money I was literally wasting by not using the coupons I felt like the stupid one. So after that class (which I had to pay $10 for) I decided I was going to:
1) make the most of that spent $10
2) try my hand at saving a few dollars here and there
There are a lot of “tricks” in the couponing world but if you know how to work the system you can save big! Every now and then I do just that, save big. However, most of the time I may save a buck or two because I buy very little packaged food plus a lot of organic items. Therefore, my weekly grocery budget is what some of these great couponers budget is for the whole entire month including their toiletries! (and I’m OK with that). I also do not buy stuff just because I have a coupon. My rule of thumb is if you wouldn’t buy it without a coupon why buy it at all?
I always compare everything to WalMart’s prices, because lets face it, they really do usually have the item the cheapest if it’s NOT on sale somewhere else.
So with all of that said, I will be sharing on here from time to time the ways I “saved big”. Hopefully it will help you out to “save big” too!
Here’s what I bought today:
This is how it all played out:
Item | Price | Coupon $ Amount | Price with Coupon |
Chocolate Chip Cookies | 2.69 | – | I indulged! My daughter is starting preschool and has orientation tonight, I needed a comfort food! 🙂 |
Green Wise Organic Milk | $5.59/gallon | $1.00 | $4.59 |
Publix Baby Wipes | $2.29/case | Buy 1 Get 1 Free | $2.29 |
Publix Diapers | $17.99/box | Buy 1 Get 1 Free | $12.99/2 boxes (see below) |
$5.00 big box of Publix diapers | **Here is where I really did all of my savings. I used the B1G1 coupon. Even though they were BOTH store coupons for the same type item I was able to use them BECAUSE I bought two boxes – I was able to use my 2nd coupon (1 coupon per item) so I got an additional $5 off |
Does that make sense?
WITHOUT COUPONS the price should have been: $50.26
WITH COUPONS I paid: $23.98
SAVINGS: $26.28 almost 48%
Not too shabby, huh? Now I know that typically the couponers buy brand name items…but today buying and using store brand was in my favor. You just have to work out the numbers! If you figure out the amount per wipe, diaper, etc it is cheaper than WalMart’s store brand products.
*All of these coupons were mailed to me via a family mailer that I had signed up for on the Publix website. Check your local grocery stores to see if they have special promos like this as well.
If you have any questions please let me know! I would love to help you save some $$$$ too!!

Great job saving! Thanks for the tips!
I appreciate the tips – I REALLY need to get with it and start couponing – thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
Hi, there! You’ve got so much creativity and I’m admiring them all.
I think that’s a great start. My big hang-up with trying to coupon is that I (like you) don’t want to buy stuff just because I have a coupon for it. I try to steer clear of pre-packaged stuff too!
