I am so excited to welcome my friends at ATG Stores today as they share amazing tips for decorating your home to look like a showhouse! P.S. if you follow me on Facebook you may remember me having a vote off for the handles in my kitchen…guess what? ATG Stores is where we purchased our kitchen cabinet door handles from!
The Seattle Showhouse event, which recently wrapped in January, was an opportunity for ATGStores.com to highlight its high-quality product selection and design services, but it may have left some people asking: How can we decorate like that on a budget?
As one of the folks with the inside scoop on that design process, I’m here to tell you it’s a lot easier than you think. Take a virtual tour of the Seattle showhouse here, and then check out these four interior design tips.
1. Let themes do the heavy lifting.
Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. Your quick showhouse tour reveals some very obvious themes: modern, neutral, organic, eclectic. That may sound like a jumble, but you can simplify by choosing one or two for your décor.
TIP: Perhaps you like the ocean. If so, focus on décor in blues, greens and whites that, when arranged together, evoke a maritime vibe. Use wall art that includes these colors, whether in the abstract or as part of a landscape study, and complement the images with simple things like shells to finish the look.
The showhouse’s modern design features sharp angles that are softened by more organic décor selections like these leather poufs and hoop chairs.
2. Make a bold lighting choice.
New lighting adds a sparkling splash in many areas of the Seattle Showhouse, including the living room, the kitchen and the home office. The style here is decidedly modern, but the great thing about lighting is that there are options for any look at nearly any price point.
TIP: Worried about complicated installation? Select a striking floor lamp instead – they come in a variety of designs, many of which have conservative footprints, so you can put them almost anywhere for added décor punch.
Notice how this pendant in the dining area demands a second look, yet doesn’t overwhelm the space.
3. Know that neutral is not boring.
The showhouse makes great use of the neutral palette, in part because it made it easier for the designers to collaborate online to create a cohesive look using virtual tools, without ever having visited the home. But, you can see how it never takes away from the variety in the décor or design.
TIP: Be a friend to browns and beiges, and they will provide you with great décor looks that last. Use umber, copper, sienna and other earthy colors to broaden the palette, and then spice it up with small pops of color that are easy to swap out when the mood strikes.
The showhouse living room is a study in neutral tones anchored by seagrass area rugs and a “floating” couch design in buttery bonded leather.
4. Use low-hanging DIY fruit for décor practice.
Even the greenest DIY-er should have no fear of the screwdriver, the hammer and the level. Remember the ancient pyramids? They did that without a screwdriver.
TIP: Choose fun, easy projects that a) aren’t expensive, b) give you practice and c) make your home look prettier. Hang a picture. Screw in some new cabinet pulls. Install a bathroom towel bar. Before you know it, you’ll be mounting that flat-screen TV with confidence!
Good luck using these tips, and don’t forget to swing by ATGStores.com for more inspiration, a great selection and tons of chic design ideas.
