We are entering into Cold & Flu season big time. Every time I scroll my Facebook newsfeed I see yet another friends kids are sick 🙁 Which means they have to miss school, which means they are going to the doctor, which means they have to miss work, which means LOTS of money spent!! And the cycle repeats itself because you’re never “lucky” enough to have all of your kids sick at the same time – instead they take turns! (isn’t that so sweet of them? It’s just like when they’re playing with toys, right? 😉 )
We used to be apart of this crowd also. A kid would get sick then they’d miss school and I’d be taking them to the doctor, I’d pay the hefty co-pay of $35 and then run to the drug store to pick up any medications they were supposed to take only for them to absolutely hate them, fight them to take it, and most of the time end up never finishing out the prescribed doses. Then before you knew it, the next kid would be sick. Does this sound familiar to you?
Thankfully now we are using preventative methods. In fact, this is a bold claim, but it’s the truth. In the last 11 months (Jan 2015-today, Nov 2015) we have not been to the doctor for any visits outside of their birthday wellness visits. (and no, I’m not just keeping them home when they’re sick not letting them see the doctor…truthfully we just haven’t been sick the way that we used to be!)
On a daily basis these are the products that I give my kids to keep their immune systems healthy and fill in all of the nutritional gaps that they have from their diets.
Lets begin by figuring out how to tell the difference between a Cold & the Flu:
Prevention Is Key:
As with almost any illness, prevention is your best strategy. When you start seeing that people are getting sick around you, remember to eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep. The number one prevention tool you have is to wash your hands frequently.
1) HAND WASHING:
Washing hands remains the most effective way to protect yourself and your family from colds and flu. Lather, rinse, repeat throughout the day. Do it long enough to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.
2) ADEQUATE SLEEP:
Sleep may be your immune system’s secret weapon, according to recent scientific research. Less than seven hours of sleep a night made people three times more likely to catch a cold than those who got eight or more hours of zzzs.
While very vigorous physical activity (like running a marathon) can put a damper on your immune system, most scientists agree that moderate physical activity actually helps boost the immune cells that fight off invaders.
4) GOOD NUTRITION:
An orange a day (along with strawberries, bell peppers, potatoes, and other vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables) can help keep the doctor away. Lean meat, fish, and other protein sources also provide the amino acids needed to help maintain your immune system. Don’t forget to fill in nutritional gaps with immune supporting nutrients like zinc and vitamins D, A, C and E. Harvard scientists even suggest vitamin D supplements may help reduce the occurrences of colds. The scientists found low vitamin D levels in nearly 20,000 Americans increased their cold and flu risk.
Scientific research has led to the discovery of a combination of plant extracts that naturally boost the body’s own production of interferon, a component of the immune system that helps fight off viruses. Other plant compounds found in elderberry and echinacea extracts can help, too. Take these when you feel the first sign of something coming on, and continue taking them for about a week as needed.

Even if you do all of the above preventative measures, what should you do if you DO get sick or start to feel under the weather?…
